Foodie

I am a foodie and I think foodies, just for curiosity's sake, love to cook!
to experiment!
and be very adventurous!
and since the time I had a chance to cook (while working and staying away from home) I have loved to try out different cuisines and ingredients....(not to much early success as my room-mates of those days will vouch for, and most probably NOT with a smile on their faces!
since marriage, my very patient husband has been my guinea-pig and it has helped that he was a foodie himself and a fauji(army man) on top of that...
why "fauji" you ask? its becoz by the sole virtue of being married into the army-you have to learn how to cook:
A- all kinds of North Indian and South Indian cuisine (you don't know how to make dosa? shame on you!!)
B-have to know the basic "Chinese cuisine" (noodles, fried rice, one dry and one gravy dish)
C- the basic white sauce, red sauce, cutlet and chicken Continental fare...
it didnt help that I knew "next to nothing" of the basic cooking!
In the first year of marriage I think I might have been taught around 5 ways of making the "aaloo paratha" (potato stuffed bread) by the other army wives who took pity on my incompetence!
And being a Muslim army wife...biryani and kabab were the few things I should have learnt before I got married!!
So being on the phone with my mother and my mother in law while cooking the difficult but aromatic Mughlai dishes was the only alternative I had...
In this whole process of trying, testing and then trying again (My biryani just doesn't pass!) for nearly a decade...I have developed a "love" for cooking.......  ("ting!" there shines my halo)
who am I kidding!!!! I HATE the daily grind of cooking the dal, sabzi and roti drill (get me a cook for that any day!)
but my zest of trying exotic and new dishes and ingredients hasn't died down!(honestly)
and when we came to the US that was one of the things I was looking forward to...the wide array of the exotic ingredients that I had only read about in the cook books and was just itching to get my hands on!
so here are a list of the dishes that I have experimented with-taken from the internet, cookbooks, and given a la Maryam twist! (just click on the titles...NOT the fotos)
I hope you enjoy my offerings and would try them out...and hopefully add a twist of yours and make it your own... do let me know if you do that!
